In an era when Arsenal find it extremely difficult to retain players, allowing them to leave cheaply or on Bosmans, surely the Gunners should keep Martinez at the club a bit longer. After all, the keeper signed a six-year deal and it’s difficult to see a weakness in his game.
The good news is Martinez wants to stay, but he’s sick of being loaned out. Arsenal need a decent back-up keeper, as Cech is retiring. It seems like the ready-made replacement is already within the ranks.
No doubt Reading would like to sign Martinez permanently. The Argentinian has done well there by all accounts, but he does want to return to Arsenal.
The Gunners won’t have a lot to spend in the transfer market compared to the other ‘big’ clubs and it was interesting to note that seven Premier League clubs spent more agents’ fees than Arsenal.
Now it’s becoming clear that the parsimonious attitude of the club was not something that Wenger was solely responsible for. The stadium was supposed to be the reason for cutting back on transfer fees, but that excuse is gone now. However, the policy remains in place.
Therefore, the only sensible course of action is to keep Martinez. He’s definitely good enough to be a second choice keeper and he has the potential to improve still further.
As it is, Arsenal will probably have to spend huge sums to replace Ramsey and Welbeck, so there’s no point splashing the cash on a keeper.
