I don’t want to call for Emery’s head, but his decisions in the last couple of days demand closer scrutiny.
After bringing Ozil back into the fold against Liverpool away, Emery replaced him with Arsenal 5-3 up. Needless to say, Liverpool fought back to draw in normal time and win on penalties.
Then against Wolves, Emery made similar mistakes. Firstly, by taking Pepe out of the starting line up, Emery shocked a lot of fans.
Even if Emery can be forgiven for that, the question is why take off Lacazette and Torreira and replace them with inexperienced players. If Emery wants to know why Arsenal can’t defend a lead, he should look to his misuse of substitutes.
Overall, Arsenal didn’t really deserve more than a draw. Playing the ball out from the back is still not working. Only a fool would claim that it is.
Almost as startling as that useless tactic is Arsenal’s lack of shape defensively. You need to get bodies behind the ball if you want to stop conceding silly goals. Arsenal are not doing that, so it’s no surprise that more points have been thrown away.
Individually, Arsenal have a potentially great team. Tactically, though, they are a shambles.
Although the fans may not want him, Mourinho would fix this mess, so I hope he get appointed as Emery’s successor.
