Dembele deal depends on Ospina or Perez exit

Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele would be a marquee signing in every sense of the word, but it still seems that this deal is unlikely to be rushed through before the transfer deadline.

However, we know that Dembele is close to Aubameyang and other Arsenal players, and anyone else with a connection to Borussia Dortmund, so surely he would fit in well at Arsenal. Additionally, if he stays at the Camp Nou, he will have to compete with new Barca signing Malcom for a place in the starting eleven there.

The biggest stumbling block is the transfer fee. Reports vary, but some claim Arsenal will have to pay a £10m loan fee and then an additional £90m at the end of the season to make the deal permanent.

As well as that, Arsenal have to ship out ‘dead wood’, which is harsh expression to describe players that I feel could still be useful to Arsenal like Calum Chambers (who has already signed for Fulham on loan), Chuba Akpom (sold to PAOK Salonika), David Ospina (going, going, still not gone), Lucas Perez (on the verge of joining West Ham for £5m) and Danny Welbeck (who a number of clubs are chasing).

The other thing to bear in mind is Arsenal have reached the maximum quota of 17 non-homegrown players in their squad (of 25 maximum, not including U21 players). Just look at the following list (but please note that these are not squad numbers) and see how many are homegrown, as indicated by an asterix.

1. Petr Cech
2. Bernd Leno
3. Damian Martinez *
4. Sead Kolasinac
5. Nacho Monreal
6. Stephan Lichsteiner
7. Hector Bellerin *
8. Rob Holding *
9. Shkodran Mutafi
10. Sokratis
11. Laurent Koscielny
12. Lucas Torreira
13. Mohamed Elneny
14. Granit Xhaka
15. Aaron Ramsey *
16. Mesut Ozil
17. Henrik Mhitaryan
18. Alex Iwobi *
19. Alexandre Lacazette
20. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
21. Danny Welbeck *
22. Lucas Perez
23. David Ospina

As you may have noticed, Arsenal already have 17 non-homegrown players in the squad. Therefore, it is imperative that Arsenal ship out Perez or Ospina to make way for Dembele. Until they can do that, their hands are tied in the transfer market.

You can add, Joel Campbell to the non home grown list. He is still training with Arsenal. So two players will have to be moved before adding another non home grown player
