Arsenal – still psychologically brittle

What a horrible way to start a Bank Holiday weekend! Two points dropped against Norwich!

I predicted a tight game1-0 to Arsenal, but I didn’t know we’d give the opposition a one-goal start. Szczeny had his worst game in an Arsenal goalkeeping shirt since the Carling Cup final calamity. How he let Norwich’s first goal in at his near post only he can explain. I’m a massive fan of the Pole, but he needs another decent goalkeeper (not Fabianski!) at the club to keep him on his toes. There is no competition for places in his department, so is it entirely his fault that he lacks concentration at times?

Our poor defensive record is not down to bad luck. It’s down to having a wafer-thin squad. The wafer-thin squad is even thinner, now that Sagna has broken his leg. With the West Brom away game coming up, the good news is Coquelin can fill in for his fellow countryman, but it could all be academic if Spurs or Newcastle win their two remaining games.

The question I’m asking myself right now is: ‘Who in this Arsenal team is a real winner?’ The nerves displayed by the team under pressure alarmed me. At 3-2 up, with just a few minutes left, why could we not retain possession of the ball? Who can handle the pressure? Only Robin van Persie, judging by this performance. The Dutchman missed a few chances, but never stopped believing in himself. How many other Arsenal players could say the same after this game?
